For the seventh consecutive year, Lacamas Community Credit Union will sponsor two free community shred days in May. The Clark County shred day is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the 192nd Avenue Financial Center, located at 19200 S.E. 31st St., in the Fisher's Landing area of Camas.
The City of Camas and Port of Camas-Washougal have both recently committed financial support for laying the groundwork to take part in the federal New Markets Tax Credit Program. The final piece of the puzzle is now in the Washougal City Council's hands. On April 15, Port commissioners voted 3-0 and on Monday the Camas City Council voted 6-0 to enter into a professional services agreement with the Camas-Washougal Economic Development Association. The document outlines the process and financial commitment for working with consultants to establish a Community Development Entity, a move that is necessary to take part in the New Markets Tax Credit Program, which could support local economic development projects.
The Camas Municipal Pool will have a new manager come summer. Last night, the Camas City Council unanimously approved an agreement with Lacamas Swim & Sport to operate the pool. It could open as early as Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting. "Swimming is important for everyone to learn and if the pool doesn't stay open, then it overloads our club," owner Denise Croucher said.
A family-oriented photo scavenger hunt is the centerpiece of an afternoon of Camas explorations being planned for Saturday. The activity is part of "Spring Into History" month, sponsored by the Downtown Camas Association. This weekend's event will also include a walking tour, historic displays, kids' activities, story-telling, history book signing, and a special unveiling. It will run from noon to 4 p.m., and starts outside at Northeast Fourth Avenue and Birch Street in downtown Camas.
A school bus was searched following a report of a Camas kindergarten student carrying bullets in a backpack. At about 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the driver of a school bus on a Prune Hill Elementary route was alerted by a student that a bullet was discovered.
Five Clark County leaders joined the Clark College Alumni Association board of directors. They are Jay Gilberg, class of 1978, of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Mari Jessup, '12, of Horenstein Law Group, Chandra Chase, '02, of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Carson Legree of Clark College and Jennifer Campbell, '13, an award-winning Clark student. Each new board member will serve a three-year term and work on a variety of projects including alumni membership recruitment, on- and off-campus fundraising events, Clark College's Outstanding Alumni Award recognition and the annual Alumni-Student Dinner.
Kelly Slauson's optimistic nature is contagious. Within a few minutes of meeting her, it's very plain to see that this 20-year-old college student is most definitely a "glass is half full," kind of gal.
Varying opinions regarding a New Markets Tax Credit program have led the Washougal City Council to defer additional discussions and a possible vote by two weeks. Councilors voted unanimously last night to table a decision regarding a professional services agreement with the Camas-Washougal Economic Development Association, the City of Camas and the Port of Camas-Washougal. It would include an expenditure of $21,875 from Washougal.
A Washougal home will go up in flames Saturday as part of a training burn.
