A Camas native has been honored with an award for his contributions to the pulp and paper industry. Bill Strand, a graduate of Camas High School in 1975 and the University of Idaho in 1989 with a PhD in chemical engineering, earned the 2011 Arne Asplund Award.
The yellow house at the corner of Northeast Sixth Avenue and Birch Street, in Camas, has thrived for two decades. During the first 19 years, its occupant - the Camas Family Health Center - relied on word-of-mouth advertising. Adding a sign to the building's exterior is among the more recent methods of promoting the center's chiropractic and massage services. This month, the health center's founder Dr. Patricia Smith attended a social media seminar with Dr. Trista Darling. "We are trying to become more interactive and trying to change with everyone else," Darling said. "We are starting to increase the use of social media."
A local business will be among the vendors at the "Better Living Show." Navidi's Olive Oils & Vinegars, located in downtown Camas, sells more than 40 varieties of olive oils and vinegars, as well as teas, pesto, sea salts, platters and gift baskets.
Local residents who enjoy eating cheeseburgers, Tater Tots and milk shakes at the Old Fashion Maid are disappointed to hear that the 60-year-old business is about to close. Marlene Macrae-Smith said the restaurant's last days of operation are expected to occur during the week of March 20-27. A more definitive closing date will be posted in the eatery's window. She and her husband John plan to retire and move back to live near their family in Everett.
After being closed since September 2009, the Liberty Theatre will officially re-open this week. The three-day event begins on Thursday, with a St. Patrick's Day showing of "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," at 6 p.m., and continues on Friday, when the "Grease Sing-A-Long," movie will hit the big screen at 5:30 and 8 p.m.

A longtime local business is under the ownership of several members of the same family. Jason Spicer, his sister Jocelyn Spicer Shedden and brother-in-law Randy Shedden, have purchased Corner Cupboard Cafe Bakery, in Washougal, from Leonard and Rachael Spencer. Family involvement in the restaurant also includes the Spicers' brother Gregory Spicer, sister Judith Spicer-Qualman and nephew Chris Eversaul. "We are two of nine kids," Jason Spicer said of him and Jocelyn. They live in Washougal.
