Georgia-Pacific will remove a boiler at its mill in downtown Camas on April 1 as part of the company’s multiyear revitalization project to modernize the mill and reduce unused buildings.

Contractors will remove the boiler using a controlled fall method, which involves the cutting of key structural components of a structure to allow it to be pulled down with heavy equipment, according to a Georgia-Pacific spokesperson.

During the process, a detour will be in place on portions of Sixth and Seventh avenues, which will temporarily be closed in both directions for approximately 15 minutes between 9 a.m. and noon.

The activity may produce loud noises or brief vibrations, and residents and businesses in the downtown Camas area “may hear and feel the fall,” a news release states.

“This has been carefully planned to minimize community impact,” the news release states.

The paper company used a similar process to remove a boiler from the mill on Feb. 19.

Georgia-Pacific also announced an investment of nearly $12 million in new and upgraded converting equipment to improve efficiency and support the mill’s long-term operations.

“The approval of these key projects is exciting for the Camas mill team,” Camas facility leader Joe Kelley said in the news release.

Construction activities are expected to take place this fall.
